Community Coffee and Chat Open Days

So, what's it all about?

As part of our ongoing commitment to being a community wellbeing resource, and the Mens Shed ethos of companionship, friendliness, community spirit and mental health wellbeing, we have initiated a Community Coffee & Chat project to improve health and wellbeing within the East Kilbride area for ALL members of the community.

We will be opening our doors once a month and inviting ALL members of the community to join us for the afternoon, whether that be for 5 minutes, or a couple of hours, you choose.

Our hope is that members of the community, who may not have a large circle of friends, come along and meet other members of the community, who may be in a similar position, so that we can reduce loneliness and social isolation within the area.

We are using our Shed as a venue to allow people to experience the benefits of human interaction through an inclusive social space. We are looking to create a local community where everyone can feel supported and connected.

We are passionate about our community and hope that our Community Chat & Coffee open days will become a friendly, safe and welcoming space for everyone. No matter if you come on your own or in groups, we welcome everyone and hope to come closer as a community and actively help with loneliness throughout.

FAQ's

Why the Mens Shed?

As you may know, the Mens Shed association was set up in Australia to combat loneliness and isolation, predominately amongst older men after retirement. However, the concept has now spread across the world, with many Sheds having women members and members who are still actively employed. The fundamental concept of a Shed is to promote health and wellbeing.

Is there a Cost?

No. The Shed will provide free tea and coffee and biscuits. However, as there is a cost to running a Shed, any donations would be much appreciated, although that is voluntary, and at your discretion.

When do you open?

We will open the last Thursday of every month from 12 noon until 4pm. The January open day will be on Thursday 30th January, then Thursday 27th February and Thursday 28th March. Dates beyond that to be confirmed.

Will I be sitting on my own?

No. We have a community chat table that creates a space for people to talk; whether it is for five minutes while you enjoy a free hot drink, or an hour of good conversation. We are simply creating an environment for social interactions to combat loneliness and to just maybe have a big impact on someone’s day, and brighten their week and month.

Do I need to be a member of the Mens Shed?

No. Our Community Coffee & Chat open days are for anyone in the community, male or female. You can of course take the time to further understand what we do at the Shed and look to become a member in the future, but that is entirely up to you.
